The village of Infesta, in Monterrei, is preparing to showcase one of the key achievements of the ALDEALIX project: the roll-out of a heating network fuelled by local biomass, which provides heating to participating households via a shared energy system.<\/p>\n\n
Next Tuesday, 6 October, between 12.00 and 14.00, Monterrei Town Hall will host a demonstration event, which will include an award ceremony and a tour of the Infesta biomass heating network.<\/p>\n\n
The initiative will provide a first-hand insight into the operation of a facility that is one of four pilot projects developed by ALDEALIX in Galicia and northern Portugal, and which aims to demonstrate the potential of biomass-based energy communities to move towards more sustainable energy models in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n
The project in Infesta is based on a simple approach: making use of local forest resources to produce thermal energy that can be used by the community itself.<\/p>\n\n
The biomass powers a communal boiler used to heat water, which is then distributed via a network of pipes to the homes connected to the system. In this way, a shared infrastructure enables participating households to be heated using a renewable energy source that is local to the area. <\/p>\n\n
The Infesta network has been operational since February 2026 and has already enabled local residents to use this heating system over the past few months.<\/p>\n\n
Beyond the energy infrastructure itself, the project aims to move towards a model in which the community plays a leading role in energy management. To this end, a neighbourhood co-operative linked to the Infesta energy community has been set up, strengthening the participatory aspect of the initiative. <\/p>\n\n
The event on 6 October will provide an opportunity to introduce this initiative to local authorities, organisations and individuals interested in learning about the potential of bioenergy and rural energy communities.<\/p>\n\n
The Infesta district heating network is also intended to serve as a demonstration project from which to draw lessons that can be applied to other areas. Indeed, one of ALDEALIX\u2019s objectives is to analyse and share the lessons learnt from its pilot projects in order to facilitate the transfer and replication of this type of solution in other rural areas. <\/p>\n\n
The model makes it possible to address various regional challenges: the sustainable use of forest resources, the production of local renewable energy, public participation, and the search for new solutions to the energy and demographic challenges facing rural areas.<\/p>\n\n
Infesta is one of the four pilot energy communities that ALDEALIX is developing in the Galicia\u2013Northern Portugal Euroregion, alongside the projects in Cerdedo-Cotobade, Arcos de Valdevez and Vila Pouca de Aguiar.<\/p>\n\n
Each of these enables the study of different contexts and implementation models, generating knowledge that can subsequently be shared through the Cross-Border Network for the Promotion of Rural Bioenergy.<\/p>\n\n
The demonstration event in Monterrei thus provides a new opportunity to translate the project\u2019s findings from the technical sphere into the local context, demonstrating in a practical way how cooperation, local biomass and community involvement can help drive the energy transition in rural areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
